Use Common Spoken Fillers in French

Learn to use common French spoken fillers like bon, alors, du coup, and en fait to make your conversation sound more natural and fluent.
A candid photograph of two people engaged in a lively conversation at an outdoor cafe in Paris, one person with a slightly thoughtful, engaged expression, leaning in as if trying to catch a word, the other person speaking animatedly. The background shows blurred Parisian street life and historic architecture under warm, soft sunlight, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
To sound more natural in French, it's helpful to use 'fillers' – small words and phrases that native speakers use to pause, transition, or manage the flow of conversation. In this deck, we'll learn some of the most common ones. You'll memorise them as fixed chunks.
Lesson#2
Let's start with 'bon'. You can use 'bon' to launch into a new topic, or to reset the conversation, a bit like saying 'Right...' or 'Okay...' in English. For example: 'Bon, on commence ?' which means 'Right, shall we start?'.
Quiz#3
How do you say 'Right, what are we doing today?' in French?

Bon, qu'est-ce qu'on fait aujourd'hui ?

Lesson#4
Next is 'alors'. It's a very common way to open a conversation or make a transition, similar to 'So...' or 'Well...' in English. For instance, to ask a friend about their day, you could start with 'Alors, ta journée ?'.
Quiz#5
Translate into French, speaking to a friend: 'So, what did you think of the film?'

Alors, qu'est-ce que tu as pensé du film ?

Lesson#6
The phrase 'du coup' is extremely common in spoken French. It's used to show a direct consequence, like 'so', 'as a result', or 'so then'. For example: 'Il pleuvait, du coup on est restés à la maison', meaning 'It was raining, so we stayed at home'.
