Replacing Things with Prepositions

Learn to form and use unsplit Dutch pronominal adverbs combining prepositions with er, hier, daar, and waar.

A close-up, dramatic photograph captures an ornate, vintage iron key perfectly fitting into an equally intricate, antique Spanish-style lock on a weathered wooden door, bathed in warm, soft light to emphasize the intricate details and the precision of the fit, with a shallow depth of field.

Lesson#1
In Dutch, prepositions cannot combine directly with words like 'het', 'dit', 'dat', or 'wat'. Instead of saying 'op het' or 'met wat', Dutch turns these pronouns into special reference words and fuses them to the front of the preposition. In this deck, you will learn how to build and use these unsplit pronominal adverbs in natural spoken conversation.
Lesson#2
To ask a question about an object or concept, 'wat' becomes 'waar' and fuses directly to the front of the preposition. For example, 'op' plus 'wat' becomes 'waarop', meaning 'on what' or 'for what'. 'Waarop wacht je?' means 'What are you waiting for?'.
Quiz#3
Speaking to a friend, translate into Dutch: 'What are you waiting for?'

Waarop wacht je?

Quiz#4
Speaking to a group of friends, translate into Dutch: 'What are you talking about?'

Waarover praten jullie?

Lesson#5
When the preposition 'met' combines with a question or reference word, it shifts to '-mee'. So 'waar' plus 'met' becomes 'waarmee', meaning 'with what'. In a shop or office, you will often hear 'Waarmee kan ik u helpen?', which means 'What can I help you with?'.
Quiz#6
Speaking formally, translate into Dutch: 'What can I help you with?'

Waarmee kan ik u helpen?
