Lesson#1
In Dutch, there are two distinct words for negation: 'niet' and 'geen'. Choosing between them depends on what kind of word you are negating. In this deck, you will learn the exact spoken rules to use each one with confidence.
Lesson#2
Use 'geen' to negate an indefinite noun that would normally take the article 'een'. It replaces 'een' entirely and means 'no' or 'not a'. For example, 'Ik heb een fiets' becomes 'Ik heb geen fiets', meaning 'I do not have a bicycle'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Dutch: 'I do not have a bicycle.'

Ik heb geen fiets

Quiz#4
Translate into Dutch: 'She is not reading a book.'

Zij leest geen boek

Quiz#5
Translate into Dutch: 'I do not have a car.'

Ik heb geen auto

Lesson#6
You also use 'geen' with uncountable mass nouns that appear without any article. For example, 'Wij hebben brood' becomes 'Wij hebben geen brood', meaning 'We have no bread'. Similarly, 'Zij drinkt thee' becomes 'Zij drinkt geen thee', meaning 'She does not drink tea'.
