Saying Where Things Are

Lesson#2
To ask where an object or person is, use the question word 'onde' followed by 'está'. For example, 'Onde está a chave?' means 'Where is the key?'.

To say that something is on or on top of a surface, use 'em cima de'. When followed by the feminine article 'a', the preposition 'de' contracts to 'da'. For example, 'A chave está em cima da mesa' means 'The key is on the table'.

To describe something as under or underneath, use the phrase 'embaixo de'. When followed by a masculine noun like 'o sofá', the preposition contracts to 'do'. For example, 'O gato está embaixo do sofá' means 'The cat is under the sofa'.
