Bids are made in a sequence called the 'bidding ladder'. Each bid must be higher than the last. A bid has two parts: a number from 1 to 7, representing tricks to be won above six, and a suit or No Trumps.

For a bid to be higher than a previous one, it can either be at a higher number level, or at the same level but in a higher-ranking suit. The suits are ranked alphabetically from lowest to highest: Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, then Spades. No Trumps is ranked highest of all.
