In this deck, you'll learn the key sounds of Swedish that differ most from English. We'll focus on special vowels, vowel length, and unfamiliar consonants so that your speech is clear and natural from your very first conversation. Swedish has three special vowel letters that don't exist in English. The first is Å. It looks like the letter A with a small circle or ring above it. It represents a rounded vowel sound, similar to the vowel in the British English word 'raw', but produced with the lips rounded more tightly. You hear it in 'två', the Swedish word for 'two'. It is spelt T V Å. Listen closely and copy: 'två'.

The second special vowel is Ö. It looks like the letter O with two dots above it. Those two dots are called an umlaut. To make this sound, shape your tongue as if you're saying 'ay' in 'day', and without moving your tongue, round your lips firmly into an O shape. You can hear it in 'röd', the Swedish word for 'red'.
