A close-up, editorial photograph of a person's hands gently placing a well-worn Russian novel onto a stack of books on a polished wooden coffee table. Nearby, a simple ceramic tea cup stands upright. Warm, natural light streams in from a window, creating soft highlights and deep shadows across the scene, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
In Russian, describing where an object is or where you are putting it depends on whether the object lies, stands, or hangs. You will learn the three pairs of posture and placement verbs, and how to use them with static and directional cases.
Lesson#2
To say an object is lying flat, use the verb 'лежать'. It answers the question 'где', meaning where, and takes the prepositional case. For example, 'Книга лежит на журнальном столике' means 'The book is lying on the coffee table'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'The book is lying on the coffee table.'

Книга лежит на журнальном столике

Lesson#4
In the present tense, 'лежать' conjugates as 'я лежу', 'ты лежишь', and 'они лежат'. In the past tense, it is 'лежал' or 'лежала'. For example, 'Документы лежат на полке' means 'The documents are lying on the shelf'.
Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'The documents are lying on the shelf.'

Документы лежат на полке

Lesson#6
To place something flat in a single completed action, use the perfective verb 'положить'. It answers 'куда', meaning where to, and governs the accusative case. In the past tense, use 'положил' or 'положила'. For example, 'Я положил твой паспорт в верхний ящик' means 'I put your passport in the top drawer'.
