This deck examines continuity and change in warfare during the early modern period. It covers the evolving composition of the army with musketeers, pikemen, and dragoons, the development of a standing army, and the impact of new weapons like muskets and pistols. The experience of war is explored through recruitment, training (including the New Model Army), and the impact on civilians. The deck concludes with a case study of the Battle of Naseby (1645).

A dramatic wide-angle photograph of 17th-century English Civil War soldiers in a 'pike and shot' formation. A line of disciplined pikemen with long, imposing pikes stands ready, protecting musketeers who are firing or reloading their early muskets amidst smoke. The scene is set on a muddy, atmospheric battlefield under a dramatic, overcast sky, capturing the grim reality and professional discipline of early modern warfare.

Lesson#1
In this deck, we explore warfare in the early modern period, from 1500 to 1700. This was an era of dramatic change, where the medieval knight was replaced by the musketeer, and feudal armies gave way to England's first professional standing army. We'll examine the impact of new gunpowder weapons and see how the English Civil War transformed fighting forever, focusing on the decisive Battle of Naseby in 1645.
Lesson#2
At the start of the 1500s, armies still had much in common with their medieval predecessors. Cavalry, consisting of wealthy knights and gentry, remained a key part of the army, valued for its shock tactics on the battlefield. Infantry still used bladed weapons for close-quarter fighting. This is an important example of continuity in warfare. However, the dominance of the mounted knight was already being challenged by new weapons and tactics.
Quiz#3
From the medieval to the early modern period, what type of soldier remained a key, high-status part of the army?

cavalry

Lesson#4
The biggest change in early modern infantry was the introduction of pikemen and musketeers. Pikemen carried long pikes, up to five metres long, to defend against cavalry charges. Musketeers carried early firearms called muskets. They were vulnerable while reloading, so they relied on the pikemen for protection. They fought together in a formation known as 'pike and shot', which became the standard for European armies.
Quiz#5
What were the two main new types of infantry soldier in the early modern period?

pikemen and musketeers

Quiz#6
What name was given to the military formation that combined pikemen and musketeers for mutual protection?

pike and shot
