iGCSE Biology: Learn Coordination and Response

Learn about the human nervous system for iGCSE Biology, including the structure of neurones, the reflex arc pathway, and how impulses cross a synapse.
A dynamic, extreme close-up photograph capturing the intense moment of a relay race baton handoff between two athletes. The focus is sharp on their hands and the baton, with the background softly blurred to emphasize the precise timing and sequence of the action.

Lesson#1
Your body needs to coordinate its actions and respond to the world around it. This is the job of the nervous system, which uses specialised cells called neurones to send information rapidly around the body as electrical impulses.
Quiz#2
What type of signal is transmitted along a neurone?

an electrical impulse

Lesson#3
The nervous system has two main parts. The Central Nervous System, or CNS, consists of the brain and spinal cord. The Peripheral Nervous System, or PNS, is made up of all the nerves that connect the rest of the body to the CNS.
Quiz#4
What are the two components of the central nervous system?

the brain and the spinal cord

Quiz#5
What does the peripheral nervous system consist of?

nerves outside the brain and spinal cord

Lesson#6
There are three types of neurone you need to know. Sensory neurones carry impulses from sense organs, or receptors, to the CNS. Motor neurones carry impulses from the CNS to muscles or glands, called effectors. Relay neurones are found inside the CNS and connect other neurones.
