The most fundamental belief in Judaism is monotheism, the belief in one God. This is declared in the most important Jewish prayer, the Shema, which begins 'Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one'. For Jews, God is a single, whole, indivisible being. This is a key contrast to other ancient religions which had many gods, and to Christian beliefs in the Trinity.

Jews believe that God is the Creator of the universe. The book of Genesis describes God creating everything that exists out of nothing. This belief has a major implication: because God created the world, it ultimately belongs to him, and humans have a duty to look after it. This is a point you can use in exam answers about the environment.
