You use it to express things that are subjective, uncertain, or emotional, like wishes, doubts, or necessities. We'll learn how to form it and when to use it.

Let's start with how to form the present subjunctive for most regular verbs. It's a two-step process. First, take the 'ils' or 'elles' form of the verb in the present tense. For example, for 'parler', that's 'ils parlent'. Second, drop the final 'ent' to find the stem, which here is 'parl'. Finally, you add the subjunctive endings.

The endings you add to the stem are: e, es, e, ions, iez, and ent. So for 'parler', the forms would be: que je parle, que tu parles, qu'il parle, que nous parlions, que vous parliez, qu'ils parlent. Notice that for 'nous' and 'vous', the endings are the same as the imperfect tense.
