To give a command, some advice, or an instruction in French, you use a special verb form called the imperative. For example, 'Speak!' or 'Listen!'. We'll learn the three main forms, used when speaking to a friend, a group of people, or when suggesting 'Let's do something'.

First, let's look at giving a command to one person you know well, using the 'tu' form. For most verbs, the imperative is the same as the regular present tense form. For verbs ending in E R, like 'parler', you take the 'tu' form, 'tu parles', and drop the final S. So, 'Speak!' becomes 'Parle !'.

For verbs that don't end in E R, like 'finir', the 'tu' command form is simply the same as the present tense.
