Static Prepositions of Location

Master Dutch static prepositions of location and positional verbs to describe where objects and places are located.

A warm and inviting 'gezellig' interior scene within a traditional Dutch canal house, bathed in soft natural light. A stylish lamp hangs above a wooden dining table, where a book lies open. Next to an antique cupboard, a comfortable sofa invites relaxation, while a content cat sits peacefully in front of a large window. This wide, atmospheric 3:2 landscape photograph captures multiple objects and their precise spatial relationships.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn to describe where people, furniture, and everyday objects are located in Dutch. You will master nine essential static prepositions of location, such as in, op, and naast. You will also practise using natural positional verbs like staan, liggen, and hangen to explain where things are.
Lesson#2
To say something is inside an enclosed space or container, use the preposition in. When items stand upright, such as bottles or cartons, Dutch uses the verb staan. For example, De melk staat in de koelkast means The milk is in the fridge.
Quiz#3
Translate into Dutch: 'The milk is in the fridge.'

De melk staat in de koelkast

Lesson#4
To say something is on top of a horizontal surface, use the preposition op. Flat objects typically take the verb liggen, meaning to lie. For example, Het boek ligt op de tafel means The book is lying on the table.
Quiz#5
Translate into Dutch: 'The book is lying on the table.'

Het boek ligt op de tafel

Lesson#6
The preposition onder means under or below. When shoes rest on their soles under furniture, Dutch describes them with the verb staan. For example, De schoenen staan onder het bed means The shoes are under the bed.
