Lesson#1
In this deck, we'll explore the vibrant and meaningful practices of Judaism, as required for your GCSE. We'll look at the synagogue, the nature of worship, the importance of Shabbat, and the key life cycle events that mark a Jewish person's journey. We'll also cover the dietary laws and the major festivals of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Pesach. Understanding these practices is crucial for explaining not just what Jews do, but why it matters to them, especially for Jews in Britain today.
Lesson#2
The synagogue is the central building for Jewish community life. The word itself comes from Greek and means 'bringing together'. For Jews, it's a house of assembly, a house of study, and most importantly, a house of prayer. It's the replacement for the Temple in Jerusalem, which was destroyed nearly two thousand years ago. While some prayers can be said anywhere, certain important prayers require a minyan – a group of at least ten adults.
Quiz#3
In Judaism, what is the minimum number of adults required for certain public prayers?

ten

Lesson#4
Inside every synagogue, you'll find several key features. The most important is the aron hakodesh, or holy ark. This is an ornamental cupboard set into the wall that faces Jerusalem, and it's where the sacred Torah scrolls are kept. In front of the ark, a light is always kept burning. This is the ner tamid, the eternal light, symbolising God's constant presence.
Quiz#5
In a synagogue, what is the name of the special cupboard where the Torah scrolls are kept?

aron hakodesh

Quiz#6
What is the name of the 'eternal light' that hangs in front of the aron hakodesh in a synagogue?
