Separable Verbs in Spoken Main Clauses

Master Dutch separable verbs in spoken main clauses, learning how prefixes detach from verb stems in statements and questions.

A close-up, dramatic photograph captures an ornate, vintage iron key perfectly fitting into an equally intricate, antique Spanish-style lock on a weathered wooden door, bathed in warm, soft light to emphasize the intricate details and the precision of the fit, with a shallow depth of field.

Lesson#1
In Dutch, many verbs are made up of two parts: a prefix and a verb stem. In spoken main clauses, these two parts split apart, sending the prefix to the very end of the sentence. In this deck, you will learn how to recognise and use these separable verbs in everyday conversation.
Lesson#2
A separable verb pairs a stressed prefix with a standard verb. For example, the verb 'opstaan' means 'to get up'. When you speak in the present tense, the stem 'staan' conjugates in second position, and 'op' moves to the very end. 'Ik sta om zeven uur op' means 'I get up at seven o'clock'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Dutch: 'She gets up at half past six.'

Zij staat om half zeven op

Lesson#4
In a yes or no question, the verb stem moves to first position, but the prefix still stays at the very end of the clause. For example, 'Sta je vroeg op?' means 'Do you get up early?'.
Quiz#5
Speaking to a friend, translate into Dutch: 'Do you get up early?'

Sta je vroeg op

Lesson#6
Another common separable verb is 'schoonmaken', which means 'to clean'. The prefix is 'schoon' and the stem is 'maken'. For example, 'Hij maakt de keuken schoon' means 'He cleans the kitchen'.
