Let's look at the relative pronoun 'dont'. You use 'dont' to replace a person or thing introduced by the preposition 'de'. It often translates to 'of which', 'whose', or 'about which'. For example, if you say 'Je t'ai parlé d'un film', you can combine this into 'C'est le film dont je t'ai parlé'.
