In this deck, we'll explore bioenergetics, which is all about how energy flows through living systems. We'll focus on two of the most fundamental processes in biology: photosynthesis and respiration. You'll learn how plants create their own food using light, and how all living organisms, including us, release energy from that food to power their life processes. We'll also investigate what limits these processes and how our bodies respond to the energy demands of exercise.

Let's begin with photosynthesis. The word 'photo' means light, and 'synthesis' means to make. So, photosynthesis is literally 'making with light'. It's the chemical reaction that plants and algae use to turn simple substances, carbon dioxide and water, into glucose, which is a type of sugar they use for energy and growth. This process is powered by light energy, which is absorbed by a green pigment called chlorophyll found inside organelles called chloroplasts.
