Let's start with 'what' or 'which'. Use 'qué' to ask for a definition or explanation, like '¿Qué es eso?' meaning 'What is that?'. Use 'cuál' to ask 'which one' from a selection, even if the selection isn't stated. For example, you would ask '¿Cuál es tu número?' for 'What is your number?'.

To ask 'who', use 'quién'. If you think the answer might be more than one person, you can use the plural form, 'quiénes'. For example, '¿Quién es?' means 'Who is it?', while '¿Quiénes son?' means 'Who are they?'.
