Past Outcomes and Reversed Actions in Russian

Master advanced past verbal aspect semantics in Russian, covering annulled two-way actions and general factual statements.

A close-up, art-directed photograph captures a human hand gently closing a weathered, ornate wooden window from the inside. Soft, diffused daylight from beyond the glass illuminates the subtle textures of the wood and skin, capturing the quiet moment of an action being reversed, composed for a 3:2 landscape.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn two advanced ways Russian uses verbal aspect in the past tense. You will discover how to describe actions that were reversed, like opening a window and shutting it again, and how to state general past life events without focusing on results.
Lesson#2
Russian can use the imperfective past to report a completed action without presenting its result as current. With reversible actions, this often suggests that the result was later undone. 'Он открывал окно' can mean that he opened the window at some point, with the window now shut again. 'Он открыл окно' presents a particular completed opening and commonly draws attention to its result. Context determines the reading; perfective does not guarantee that the window remains open forever.
Quiz#3
Knowing the window is still open now, translate into Russian: 'He opened the window.' Use the perfective viewpoint practised in this deck.

Он открыл окно

Quiz#4
Knowing the window is now shut again, translate into Russian: 'He opened the window.' Use the imperfective viewpoint practised in this deck.

Он открывал окно

Quiz#5
Knowing the window was shut again afterwards, translate into Russian: 'Who opened the window?' Use the imperfective viewpoint practised in this deck.

Кто открывал окно?

Lesson#6
With borrowing, 'Антон брал эту книгу' reports that Anton took or borrowed the book on an occasion and can suggest that he has returned it. 'Антон взял эту книгу' presents a particular completed act of taking, often with the result relevant now. The verbs alone do not prove who has the book at the moment; the surrounding conversation supplies that information.
