Peasants lived in extreme poverty, and workers in the new industrial cities faced terrible conditions and low pay. These are the long-term causes of the revolution.

The First World War was the trigger that turned this discontent into revolution. The war was a disaster for Russia. The army suffered millions of casualties, and back home, the economy collapsed, leading to severe food and fuel shortages in the cities. People were starving and freezing.

In 1915, Tsar Nicholas made a disastrous decision. He went to the front line to take personal command of the Russian army, making himself its Commander-in-Chief. This was a terrible move because from then on, every military defeat was seen as his personal failure, destroying his authority.
