Prepositional Case: Cities and Everyday Places

Master the Russian prepositional case of location to state where you live and work using the prepositions в and на.

A close-up, art-directed photograph from inside a traditional Russian cafe, looking out through a large window at a bustling Moscow street scene. The warm, soft light highlights a person's hands subtly visible in the foreground, perhaps holding a cup of tea, with the vibrant, slightly blurred city life visible beyond the glass, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
To say where you live, work, or spend your time in Russian, you use the prepositional case. This case describes static location and answers the question 'Где?', meaning 'where?'. In this deck, you will learn how noun endings change and when to choose between the prepositions 'В' and 'на'.
Lesson#2
To ask where someone lives, you can ask a friend 'Где ты живёшь?'. When answering with a city or country, use the preposition 'В', which means 'in'. Most masculine nouns ending in a consonant add the ending Е. For example, 'Лондон' becomes 'в Лондоне'.
Quiz#3
Speaking to a friend, how do you say 'Where do you live?' in Russian?

Где ты живёшь?

Quiz#4
How do you say 'in London' in Russian?

в Лондоне

Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'I live in London.'

Я живу в Лондоне

Lesson#6
Feminine nouns ending in the vowel sound А or Я replace that vowel with the ending Е to express location. For example, the capital 'Москва' becomes 'в Москве'. The word for a room, 'комната', becomes 'в комнате'.
