At the start of the 1700s, many old ideas about medicine continued. The Theory of the Four Humours was still used, and the most popular explanation for epidemics was miasma, or bad air. However, the scientific thinking of the Renaissance was beginning to challenge these ancient beliefs, setting the stage for a period of incredible discovery and change.

One of the most feared diseases of the 18th century was smallpox. It was a terrifying killer, and survivors were often left with deep scars. Into this picture steps Edward Jenner, a country doctor in Gloucestershire. He made a crucial observation: milkmaids who caught a mild disease called cowpox did not seem to catch the deadly smallpox.

Jenner decided to test his theory scientifically. In 1796, he took pus from a cowpox sore on a milkmaid and inserted it into a cut on the arm of a young boy, James Phipps. The boy developed cowpox and recovered. A few weeks later, Jenner exposed Phipps to smallpox, but the boy remained healthy. He was immune. This was the world's first vaccination.
