Cause, Consequence, and Reporting Conjunctions

Master Russian subordinating conjunctions to express causes with 'потому что', state results with 'поэтому', and report thoughts and speech with 'что'.

A close-up, slightly elevated shot captures a person's hands gently holding an open, well-loved Russian language textbook, its pages filled with handwritten notes and highlighted phrases. In the softly blurred background, the iconic domes of St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow stand majestically under a clear, bright sky, hinting at the aspirations and consequences of their studies.

Lesson#1
In Russian, you often need to explain why something happens, describe what follows as a result, or share what someone thinks or says. In this deck, you will learn to connect your ideas smoothly using the spoken conjunctions for because, therefore, and that.
Lesson#2
To give a reason for an action or state, use 'потому что', which means 'because'. In spoken Russian, 'потому что' is pronounced like 'патому шта'. When someone asks 'Почему?', which means 'Why?', you can start your reply directly with 'Потому что'. For example, 'Почему ты не работаешь?' is answered by 'Потому что я отдыхаю', meaning 'Because I am resting'.
Quiz#3
How do you say 'Why are you not working?' to a friend in Russian?

Почему ты не работаешь?

Quiz#4
Translate into Russian: 'Because I am resting.'

Потому что я отдыхаю

Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'I am resting because I am not working.'

Я отдыхаю, потому что не работаю

Lesson#6
You can use 'потому что' to connect two complete clauses to explain intentions and motivations. For example, 'Я учу русский язык, потому что хочу жить в Москве' means 'I am learning Russian because I want to live in Moscow'.
