Saying What Had Already Happened

Master the spoken Pretérito Mais-Que-Perfeito Composto in Brazilian Portuguese to talk about actions completed before another past event using ter and past participles.

A striking wide-angle photograph captures a moment of realization: a person stands on a vibrant, bustling train platform in a Brazilian city, looking towards a modern train that is rapidly disappearing into the distance, having just departed. The dynamic scene conveys a powerful sense of something having *already happened* before the observer's arrival, with motion blur on the train and bright, natural light.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to describe an event that took place before another past moment. In spoken Brazilian Portuguese, you do this using the compound pluperfect, combining the imperfect of 'ter' with a past participle. This allows you to explain what had already happened when another past event occurred.
Lesson#2
To form the past participle of regular verbs ending in A R, replace the ending with A D O. For example, 'falar' becomes 'falado', and 'comprar' becomes 'comprado'. Pair the participle with 'tinha' or 'tínhamos'. 'Nós já tínhamos falado com ele' means 'We had already spoken to him'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Portuguese: 'We had already spoken to him.'

Nós já tínhamos falado com ele

Quiz#4
Translate into Portuguese: 'He said that he had already bought the tickets.'

Ele disse que já tinha comprado os ingressos

Lesson#5
For regular verbs ending in E R or I R, replace the ending with I D O. For instance, 'comer' becomes 'comido', 'partir' becomes 'partido', and 'viver' becomes 'vivido'. 'Eu já tinha comido' means 'I had already eaten'.
Quiz#6
Translate into Portuguese: 'I had already eaten.'

Eu já tinha comido
