Making Negative Sentences

Master spoken Brazilian Portuguese sentence negation, polite refusals, authentic double negations, and absolute negation words like nunca and nada.

A vibrant, sun-drenched street market scene in Brazil, where a person politely declines an offer of freshly prepared street food from a friendly vendor. The person subtly shakes their head and makes a gentle hand gesture of refusal, while the market bustles with colorful produce and lively activity in the background. Photorealistic, 3:2 landscape.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to form negative statements, give polite refusals, and use authentic Brazilian double negations. You already know subject pronouns and the present tense of 'ser' and 'estar'. Now you will learn how to put 'não' to work in natural everyday speech.
Lesson#2
To make a sentence negative in Portuguese, place the word 'não' directly before the conjugated verb. For example, 'eu não sou de Londres' means 'I am not from London'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Portuguese: 'I am not from London.'

Eu não sou de Londres

Lesson#4
The same pre-verbal pattern applies to other persons. For example, 'ela não é brasileira' means 'she is not Brazilian'.
Quiz#5
Translate into Portuguese: 'She is not Brazilian.'

Ela não é brasileira

Lesson#6
Pre-verbal negation works identically with the verb 'estar'. To say that someone is not at a place, put 'não' right before the verb. For example, 'você não está em casa' means 'you are not at home'.
