Let's start with pronunciation essentials. This course uses Castilian Spanish, a pronunciation commonly heard in central and northern Spain. One of its most noticeable features is that Z, and C before E or I, sound like the English “th” in “think”. In this quick deck, you’ll practise the Spanish sounds that are most likely to feel new. First is the C and Z sound. Place the tip of your tongue lightly between your teeth and let the air pass through. You can hear it at the beginning of “zumo”, the Spanish word for “juice”. It is spelt Z U M O. Listen and copy: “zumo”.

Next is the Spanish J sound. It is a breathy sound made at the back of your throat. The letter G makes the same sound when it appears before E or I. You can hear it at the beginning of “gente”, the Spanish word for “people”. It is spelt G E N T E. Listen and copy: “gente”.
