Tools, Implements and Transport

Learn to use the bare Instrumental case in Russian without prepositions to express tools, everyday implements, utensils, and means of transport.

A stark, close-up photograph of a hand firmly holding a sleek blue pen, its tip just touching a sheet of aged paper with faint, elegant Cyrillic script. Sharp, focused light emphasizes the texture of the paper and the metallic gleam of the pen, casting subtle shadows in a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn to use the bare instrumental case without any preposition. Russian uses this construction to talk about tools, everyday implements, utensils, and means of transport.
Lesson#2
To say you are writing or drawing with a tool, use the noun in the instrumental case with no preposition. For example, 'писать ручкой' means to write with a pen, and 'писать карандашом' means to write with a pencil.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'I write with a pen.'

Я пишу ручкой

Quiz#4
Translate into Russian: 'He writes with a pencil.'

Он пишет карандашом

Lesson#5
When using paints, the plural noun 'краски' becomes 'красками'. If you describe your tool with an adjective, the adjective also takes the instrumental case, as in 'синей ручкой' for with a blue pen.
Quiz#6
Translate into Russian: 'She paints with paints.'

Она рисует красками
