Describing Accompaniment and Roles

Master the spoken Instrumental case singular of Russian adjectives to describe accompaniment, professions, and spatial positions with confidence.

A warm, intimate close-up photograph of several hands, varying in age, holding traditional Russian tea glasses (stakany) filled with hot tea and fresh mint, resting on a rustic wooden table. Soft, golden light from a nearby window illuminates the scene, casting gentle shadows and highlighting the steam rising from the tea, creating a sense of shared companionship in a cozy Russian home.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to describe accompaniment and roles using adjectives in the Instrumental case singular. You will use these endings to describe who you are with, past and future roles, and positions in space.
Lesson#2
Masculine and neuter adjectives with hard stems take the ending Ы М in the Instrumental case. For example, 'новый' becomes 'новым', as in 'с новым другом', meaning 'with a new friend'. Neuter adjectives take the same ending: 'красивое' becomes 'красивым'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'He is walking with a new male friend.'

Он гуляет с новым другом

Quiz#4
Translate into Russian: 'The table stands in front of a big window.'

Стол стоит перед большим окном

Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'We are sitting at a big table.'

Мы сидим за большим столом

Lesson#6
If a masculine or neuter adjective ends in a velar consonant, a sibilant, or a soft stem, it takes the ending И М in the Instrumental case. For example, 'хороший' becomes 'хорошим', and 'русский' becomes 'русским'. You hear this in 'с русским преподавателем', which means 'with a Russian teacher'.
