Marking Ownership Without Repeating Nouns in Spanish

Learn to use Spanish possessive pronouns like 'mío' and 'tuyo' to indicate ownership without repeating nouns, and understand the difference between 'mi' and 'mío'.
A vibrant, high-angle photograph of a rustic wooden table in a sunny Spanish outdoor cafe. On the table, various personal items are laid out: a stylish pair of sunglasses, a set of old metal keys, a well-read book, and a traditional ceramic cup. Two distinct hands are visible in the frame, one gently claiming a pair of sunglasses, the other pointing towards a different item, creating a clear visual distinction of "mine" and "yours." The scene is warm and inviting, with dappled sunlight.

Lesson#1
You already know how to use possessive adjectives before a noun, like in 'mi casa' for 'my house'. In this deck, you'll learn how to say 'mine', 'yours', and so on, to show ownership without repeating the noun. These are called possessive pronouns.
Lesson#2
Let's start with 'mine'. In Spanish, this is 'mío'. Unlike in English, it changes to match the gender and number of the item you're talking about. For a masculine singular item like 'el libro', you say 'es mío'. For a feminine singular item like 'la mesa', you say 'es mía'.
Quiz#3
Someone points to a book and asks if it's yours. How do you say 'It's mine' in Spanish, referring to 'el libro'?

Es mío.

Quiz#4
Someone points to a table and asks if it's yours. How do you say 'It's mine' in Spanish, referring to 'la mesa'?

Es mía.

Lesson#5
For plural items, 'mine' becomes 'míos' for masculine things and 'mías' for feminine things. For example, 'los bolígrafos son míos' means 'the pens are mine', and 'las sillas son mías' means 'the chairs are mine'.
Quiz#6
Translate into Spanish: The books are mine.

Los libros son míos.
