To talk about your past responsibilities at work or in your studies, you can use a combination of two past tenses. First, use the 'imparfait' to describe the general situation, for example 'Je travaillais dans un café'. Then, use the verb 'devoir' also in the 'imparfait' to state your duty, like 'je devais servir les clients'.

Je travaillais dans un magasin et je devais conseiller les clients.

To explain a choice you made in the past, you can use the phrase 'J'ai choisi', which is in the 'passé composé', followed by 'parce que' to give your reason. For example, 'J'ai choisi cette formation parce que je voulais apprendre une nouvelle compétence'.
