Swedish Interrogative Main Clauses: Yes/No Questions

Learn how to form Swedish polar yes-or-no questions using verb-initial inversion and respond with natural spoken affirmative and negative formulas.
A candid, close-up photograph of two young people, possibly students, engaged in a direct conversation at a modern, minimalist Swedish cafe. One person looks intently at the other with an inquisitive expression, as if asking a straightforward yes/no question, while the other holds a coffee cup, listening with a thoughtful gaze, bathed in soft, natural light.

Lesson#1
In Swedish, you turn a statement into a yes-or-no question simply by putting the verb first. You do not need an auxiliary word like 'do' or 'does' in English. This deck teaches you how to form yes-or-no questions naturally, and how to give common spoken answers.
Lesson#2
To ask a question with 'är', meaning 'are' or 'is', put 'är' in the first position. The subject pronoun follows right after the verb. For example, 'Är du student?' means 'Are you a student?'. The word 'svensk' means 'Swedish'.
Quiz#3
Speaking to a friend, translate into Swedish: 'Are you a student?'

Är du student?

Quiz#4
Translate into Swedish: 'Is he Swedish?'

Är han svensk?

Lesson#5
The verb 'är' never changes form, even with plural pronouns like 'ni' for plural you, or 'de' for they. 'Här' means 'here'. 'Är ni här?' means 'Are you here?'.
Quiz#6
Speaking to more than one person, translate into Swedish: 'Are you here?'

Är ni här?
