Describing Possessions, Absence and Specific Locations

Learn how to use singular Genitive adjectives in Russian to describe possessions, absence, and specific locations.

A dramatic close-up photograph of an ornate, antique Russian book, open to a page with elegant Cyrillic script, resting on a polished mahogany desk inside a grand, sun-drenched old library. Golden light streams through a tall window, illuminating dust motes and creating deep shadows among towering bookshelves in the softly blurred background, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to describe things when talking about possession, absence, and specific locations using the Genitive case. You already know how nouns change after prepositions like 'из' and 'для'. Now, we will add adjectives into the mix so you can say things like 'from a beautiful city' or 'without a warm jacket'.
Lesson#2
For masculine and neuter adjectives with hard stems, the Genitive singular ending is written with the letters О Г О. In spoken Russian, the letter Г in this ending is pronounced like a V, sounding like 'ово'. For example, 'новый' becomes 'нового'. To say 'near the new shopping centre', you say 'около нового торгового центра'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'We met near the new shopping centre.'

Мы встретились около нового торгового центра

Quiz#4
Translate into Russian: 'He arrived from a beautiful city.'

Он приехал из красивого города

Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'They are waiting near the red bus.'

Они ждут около красного автобуса

Lesson#6
Adjectives with stems ending in velar consonants like К or Г also take the О Г О ending in the Genitive singular, pronounced like 'ово'. For instance, 'маленький' becomes 'маленького', and 'русский' becomes 'русского'. To say 'a cup of Russian tea', you say 'чашка русского чая'.
