To describe an ongoing action, Brazilian Portuguese verbs change their endings to form the gerund. For verbs ending in A R, replace the ending with A N D O. For example, falar becomes falando, meaning speaking, morar becomes morando, meaning living, and trabalhar becomes trabalhando, meaning working.

For verbs ending in E R, replace the ending with E N D O. For example, comer becomes comendo, meaning eating, beber becomes bebendo, meaning drinking, and fazer becomes fazendo, meaning doing. Verbs ending in I R take I N D O, so abrir becomes abrindo, meaning opening, assistir becomes assistindo, meaning watching, and partir becomes partindo, meaning leaving.
