Negative Pronouns and Adverbs in Russian

Learn how to form and use Russian negative pronouns and adverbs with mandatory double negation.

A wide, atmospheric photograph of a vast, empty snow-covered Russian steppe at dusk. A single, faint track of footprints disappears into the distance, leading to an endless horizon under a heavy, steel-grey sky. The scene is devoid of any people or structures, emphasizing a profound sense of absence and isolation, with muted colours and soft, melancholic light.

Lesson#1
Russian negative pronouns and adverbs such as никто, ничего and никогда normally combine with a negative predicate. With an ordinary finite verb, use не: 'Никто не знает' means 'Nobody knows'. The word нет already supplies negation: 'Никого нет' means 'Nobody is here'.
Lesson#2
The Russian pronoun for nobody or no one is 'никто'. Remember that double negation is mandatory: 'никто' does not replace verbal negation. 'Никто не знает' means 'Nobody knows'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'Nobody knows.'

Никто не знает

Quiz#4
Translate into Russian: 'Nobody came.'

Никто не пришёл

Lesson#5
When nobody is the direct object of an action or used with 'нет' to state someone is not present, 'никто' changes to 'никого'. 'Он никого не видел' means 'He did not see anyone'.
Quiz#6
Translate into Russian: 'He did not see anyone.'

Он никого не видел
