A candid photograph of two people standing on a charming bridge over an Amsterdam canal, one person gesturing subtly as if asking a question, while the other looks thoughtfully towards a path, contemplating a choice. The late afternoon light casts a warm glow on the historic Dutch architecture and the tranquil water.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to ask Yes or No questions in Dutch and answer them simply. In Dutch, you form these questions by inverting the word order: you place the verb right at the beginning of the sentence, followed immediately by the person. Using a slightly rising intonation at the end makes your question sound completely natural.
Lesson#2
To ask a question with 'zijn', which means 'to be', start with the verb in the first position. When talking to a friend, the statement 'je bent' flips to 'ben je'. For example, 'Ben je thuis?' means 'Are you at home?'. For a third person, 'hij is' flips to 'is hij', as in 'Is hij in Nederland?'.
Quiz#3
Speaking to a friend, translate into Dutch: 'Are you at home?'

Ben je thuis?

Quiz#4
Translate into Dutch: 'Is he in the Netherlands?'

Is hij in Nederland?

Lesson#5
When speaking to someone formally, the polite pronoun 'u' combines with 'bent'. Inverting it puts the verb first: 'Bent u in Amsterdam?' means 'Are you in Amsterdam?'. To ask about a female third person, say 'Is zij in Utrecht?' to ask 'Is she in Utrecht?'.
Quiz#6
Speaking formally, translate into Dutch: 'Are you in Amsterdam?'

Bent u in Amsterdam?
