Talking About Future Plans

Learn how to talk about future plans and scheduled events in Dutch using the present tense with time adverbs and the auxiliary verb gaan.

A person cycles on a scenic winding path through a classic Dutch polder landscape, with canals and windmills visible in the distance. The path stretches towards a bright horizon under a clear sky, symbolizing future journeys and plans. The image is a vivid, wide-angle photograph in golden hour light, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
In Dutch, there is no need for a complicated future tense when talking about upcoming plans. In everyday conversation, you can talk about the future in two easy ways: using the present tense with a time word, or using the auxiliary verb 'gaan'. In this deck, you will learn how to use both naturally.
Lesson#2
When an event is already scheduled or arranged, Dutch speakers often simply use the present tense combined with a time word. When you put the time word at the start of the sentence, the verb and subject switch places. 'Vanavond eet ik bij mijn ouders' means 'Tonight I am eating at my parents' place'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Dutch: 'Tonight I am eating at my parents' place.'

Vanavond eet ik bij mijn ouders

Lesson#4
You can do the same with 'morgen', which means 'tomorrow'. For example, 'Morgen vlieg ik naar Londen' means 'Tomorrow I am flying to London', using the verb 'vliegen'.
Quiz#5
Translate into Dutch: 'Tomorrow I am flying to London.'

Morgen vlieg ik naar Londen

Lesson#6
To talk about arrangements further ahead, you can use 'volgende week', which means 'next week'. The verb 'verhuizen' means 'to move house'. 'Volgende week verhuizen wij' means 'Next week we are moving'.
