Spoken Indirect Questions

Learn to ask courteous spoken indirect questions in Dutch using embedded clauses with question words and 'of'.

A polite conversation between two people on a charming, sunlit canal-side street in a Dutch city. One person is gesturing slightly, perhaps asking for directions or information, while the other listens attentively with a friendly expression. Traditional Dutch architecture, bicycles, and blooming flowers line the canal, captured in a vivid, realistic photograph with a 3:2 landscape aspect ratio.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to make your questions more polite and natural in Dutch by asking indirectly. Instead of asking a blunt direct question, you will wrap it in a courteous frame like 'kunt u mij vertellen' and send the verb to the end of the sentence.
Lesson#2
When you ask an indirect question with a question word, the question word introduces an embedded clause. Just like in other Dutch subclauses, the conjugated verb moves to the very end. For example, to ask where the station is, say 'Kunt u mij vertellen waar het station is?'.
Quiz#3
Speaking formally, translate into Dutch: 'Can you tell me where the station is?'

Kunt u mij vertellen waar het station is

Quiz#4
Speaking to a friend, translate into Dutch: 'Can you tell me where the toilet is?'

Kun je mij vertellen waar het toilet is

Lesson#5
Another very common polite frame is 'weet u' or 'weet je', meaning 'do you know'. With time expressions like 'hoe laat', the entire phrase 'hoe laat' introduces the embedded clause, and the verb goes to the end. For example, 'Weet u hoe laat de trein vertrekt?' means 'Do you know what time the train departs?'.
Quiz#6
Speaking formally, translate into Dutch: 'Do you know what time the train departs?'

Weet u hoe laat de trein vertrekt
