Let's start with the air we breathe today. Earth's atmosphere is a mixture of gases. The vast majority, about eighty percent, is nitrogen. The second most abundant gas, making up about twenty percent, is oxygen, which is essential for life as we know it. The remaining one percent is mostly argon, with small amounts of other gases, including carbon dioxide.
