Personal Pronouns and Social Formality

Learn Russian nominative personal pronouns and master the spoken distinction between informal and formal address.

A wide-angle, sun-drenched photograph inside a vibrant Russian university cafe. In the foreground, two young students lean in close, laughing animatedly over a shared textbook, their relaxed posture conveying informal address. In the mid-ground, an older, formally dressed professor engages politely with a barista at the counter, maintaining a clear, respectful distance, all bathed in warm, inviting light.

Lesson#1
In Russian, personal pronouns allow you to speak about yourself, address other people, and state who someone is. In this deck, you'll learn the full set of subject pronouns, including how to say 'I', 'he', 'she', and 'they'. You'll also master the spoken difference between addressing someone casually as a friend and speaking politely to a stranger or teacher.
Lesson#2
To say 'I' in Russian, use the single word 'Я'. In the present tense, Russian does not use a linking verb like 'am' to state a role or occupation. For a male student, the word is 'студент', so 'Я студент' means 'I am a student'. For a female student, say 'студентка', making 'Я студентка' mean 'I am a student'.
Quiz#3
How do you say 'I' in Russian?

я

Quiz#4
Referring to a male speaker, translate into Russian: 'I am a student.'

Я студент

Quiz#5
Referring to a female speaker, translate into Russian: 'I am a student.'

Я студентка

Lesson#6
When speaking to one person informally, such as a friend, family member, or child, use the pronoun 'ты'. To tell a male friend that he is a student, simply say 'Ты студент'.
