One key use of the plus-que-parfait is to explain the reason for a past situation. The reason is the action that happened first. For example: 'Je n’ai pas pu entrer parce que j’avais oublié mes clés.' Here, 'I had forgotten my keys' happened before 'I couldn't get in', and it explains why.
