In Swedish, adjectives can stand directly in front of a noun or after a linking verb like 'är'. When an adjective comes after the verb, it is in the predicative position. In this deck, you will learn how predicative adjectives change to match the gender and number of the subject.

When the subject is a singular common gender noun, the predicative adjective stays in its base form. For example, 'bilen är röd' means 'the car is red', 'lägenheten är fin' means 'the flat is nice', and 'sängen är gammal' means 'the bed is old'.

When the subject is a singular neuter noun, the predicative adjective takes the ending T. For example, 'huset är rött' means 'the house is red', 'bordet är stort' means 'the table is large', and 'äpplet är rött' means 'the apple is red'. For 'the room is cold', say 'rummet är kallt'. In a question, the verb comes first: 'Är kaffet varmt?' means 'Is the coffee hot?'.
