Welcome to this deck on advanced subordinate clauses in German. You will learn how to connect ideas to express reasons, contrasts, conditions, and purposes. Mastering these will allow you to build more complex and natural-sounding sentences, a key skill at the B1 level.

Let's start with expressing a reason or cause. The most common way to do this is with the conjunction 'weil', which means 'because'. When you use 'weil', it introduces a subordinate clause, and the conjugated verb in that clause moves to the very end. For example, 'Ich bleibe zu Hause, weil ich müde bin'. I am staying at home because I am tired.

Another word for expressing a reason is 'da', which can be translated as 'since' or 'as'. It works just like 'weil', with the verb at the end. 'Da' is often used when the reason is already known to the listener, or to start a sentence. For example, 'Da es regnet, bleiben wir drinnen'. Since it's raining, we're staying inside.
