To talk about the past in French, you'll mainly use a tense called the passé composé. It's used for completed actions, especially in conversation, to say what you 'did' or 'have done'.

The passé composé is a compound tense, meaning it has two parts. First, you use an auxiliary verb, which is either 'avoir' or 'être' in the present tense. Second, you add the past participle of the main verb.

Most verbs in French use 'avoir' as their auxiliary verb in the passé composé. A smaller, specific group of verbs, mostly about movement or a change of state, use 'être'.

Let's start with 'avoir'. To say 'I have eaten', you take 'j'ai', the present tense of 'avoir', and add the past participle 'mangé'. So, 'J'ai mangé'. We will now learn some of the most common irregular past participles.
