Russian Spatial Prepositions and Movement

Master Russian spatial prepositions governing the instrumental case and learn the essential contrast between static location and directional motion with за and под.

A dramatic low-angle shot captures a vintage car speeding down a wet, cobblestone street in a historic Russian city at dusk, its headlights reflecting on the pavement. In the background, an ornate, brightly lit church dome towers, with a flock of birds flying across the deep blue sky.

Lesson#1
In Russian, you describe where something is located relative to other objects by using prepositions that take the instrumental case. You will learn how to say in front of, above, between, behind, and under. You will also discover how two of these prepositions shift case when describing movement towards a place.
Lesson#2
To say in front of, use the preposition 'перед' followed by a noun in the instrumental case. For example, to say that a car is standing in front of the house, you say 'Машина стоит перед домом'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'The car is standing in front of the house.'

Машина стоит перед домом

Quiz#4

Мы встретились перед входом в театр

Quiz#5

Зеркало висит перед дверью

Lesson#6
To express that something is above or over another object, use the preposition 'над' with the instrumental case. For instance, 'Лампа висит над столом' means 'The lamp hangs over the table'.
