Welcome to the exciting world of slam bidding. A 'slam' is a contract to win almost all the tricks in a hand, either 12 tricks for a small slam, or all 13 for a grand slam. They score huge bonuses, but failing to make one is costly. This deck will teach you how to know when to aim high.
Lesson#2
The first step in slam bidding is recognizing potential. A good rule of thumb is to look at your partnership's combined point count. For a small slam, you generally need around 33 combined points. For a grand slam, you'll need about 37 points.

Lesson#5
Once you think a slam might be possible, you need to check if you have enough key cards, specifically Aces. Losing the first two tricks to the opponents' Aces would be a disaster. To find out what your partner holds, you can use a special 'convention' or agreed-upon bid.

The most famous convention for investigating slams is called Blackwood. It's a simple way to ask your partner how many Aces they have. The asking bid is always 4 No Trump.
