Using When and If in Russian

Learn to connect actions and describe real conditions in Russian using the subordinating conjunctions когда and если.

A cozy interior of a traditional Russian dacha, with warm, soft light illuminating a person quietly reading a book by a large window. Outside the window, heavy rain blurs the view of a lush, green garden, creating a strong visual contrast between the inviting warmth inside and the cool, wet conditions outside, composed for a 3:2 landscape frame.

Lesson#1
In this deck, you will learn how to connect two actions using time and conditions. By using the words 'когда', meaning 'when', and 'если', meaning 'if', you will be able to form longer and more natural Russian sentences.
Lesson#2
The word 'когда' means 'when'. When a sentence starts with the time clause, state the condition with 'когда', pause briefly, and then state the main action. For example, 'Когда я отдыхаю, я читаю книги' means 'When I rest, I read books'.
Quiz#3
Translate into Russian: 'When I rest, I read books.'

Когда я отдыхаю, я читаю книги

Lesson#4
You can use 'когда' to describe actions that depend on the weather. For example, 'Когда на улице идёт дождь, мы сидим дома' means 'When it rains outside, we stay at home'.
Quiz#5
Translate into Russian: 'When it rains outside, we stay at home.'

Когда на улице идёт дождь, мы сидим дома

Lesson#6
You can also place the main clause first, followed by the 'когда' clause. For example, 'Я смотрю телевизор, когда у меня есть время' means 'I watch television when I have time'.
