Let's start with ionic bonding. This happens when a metal atom reacts with a non-metal atom. The key idea is the transfer of electrons. Metal atoms lose electrons to achieve a stable, full outer shell, while non-metal atoms gain those electrons to complete their own outer shell.
Lesson#3
When an atom loses or gains electrons, it is no longer neutral. It becomes a charged particle called an ion. Because metals lose electrons, which are negatively charged, they form positive ions. Non-metals gain electrons, so they form negative ions.
