Another great way to open a story about the past is to start with a memory. You can use the phrase 'Mi ricordo una volta che...', which means 'I remember one time when...'.

Step two is giving the setting. After you've opened, you need to set the scene. This usually involves time and place, and is a perfect use for the imperfetto tense. For example: 'Era qualche anno fa, vivevo a Roma'.
