This belief in the Trinity was formally defined in the fourth century to clarify Christian teaching. At the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, church leaders created a statement of faith called the Nicene Creed. It declares that Jesus, the Son, is 'consubstantial' with the Father, meaning they are of the very same substance or being. This creed is still recited in Catholic Mass today.
