You already know how to use basic nouns in Spanish. In this section, we'll learn how to build fuller, more descriptive noun phrases. This will help you describe people, places, and things more accurately in conversation.

Let's start with a few common exceptions to gender rules. Some nouns that end in 'a' are actually masculine. A very common example is 'problema'. To say 'a problem', you say 'un problema'.

Another type of exception comes from shortened words. For example, 'foto' is short for 'fotografía', which is a feminine word. So, even though 'foto' ends in 'o', it's feminine. You say 'una foto' for 'a photo'.
